Fraser Island
World Heritage-listed Fraser Island is not only the world’s largest sand island, but is home to the largest rainforest you can find growing out of the sand. Discover an amazing natural untouched biodiversity of coloured sand dunes, crystal clear creeks, vast inland freshwater lakes and wildlife (including dingoes, possums, wallabies, gliders, dolphins, whales and sharks). Four-wheel drive along a sandy highway (the beach) stretching for 75 miles and discover the Champagne Pools, Indian Head (the perfect viewing spot for tiger sharks, dolphins and whales), the coloured sand cliffs of The Cathedrals, the Maheno Wreck and Eli Creek where you can float along a crystal clear creek and drift with the fresh flowing waters. Head inland and explore ancient rainforests and the crystal clear waters of over 40 inland lakes, including Lake McKenzie with its pure white silica sands.
Hervey Bay
Australia’s whale watching capital, Hervey Bay is the best place in Australia to watch and admire humpback whales, and see these majestic creatures play in the clear warm waters of the bay (July - October). Hervey Bay also offers easy access to Fraser Island and many other smaller islands and sandy cays of the Southern Great Barrier Reef. With its domestic airport, Hervey Bay is the perfect gateway to experience the beauty of this magnificent environment.
Maryborough
A peaceful historical city, Maryborough is one of Queensland’s oldest provincial cities. Once a major immigration port, the Bond Store Museum, Brennan and Geraghty Store and Custom’s House offer an interesting insight into the stories of migrants who came to Queensland for a better lifestyle.
Whale Watching
Around 2000 Humpback whales migrate along Australia's east coast each year - a 6000 kilometre journey from Antarctica. There is no better place to experience their playful antics and awesome size than up close on a whale watching cruise in the protected waters of Hervey Bay. Pods of humpback whales and their calves seek out the haven of Hervey Bay's calm seas from early July - late October each year.
